What is Christian music?

Today, contemporary Christian music covers many different genres and styles of
music. It's modern day shoots root from Gospel, Southern Gospel, church Praise
& Worship, and the more recent Contemporary Christian Music or more
affectionately known as CCM. Whew! There's a lot to cover, so we'll leave this a
brief intro to Christian music and cover it in articles, blogs, and music programs to
follow. The genres Christian music cover are similar to the mainstream or secular
counterparts. They include Rock, Pop, R&B, Rap, Country, Jazz, Dance or
Electronic Music, and Instrumental. These are the simplest or major genres
covering Christian music. There are some interesting differences in the
sub-categorizations from the secular, or mainstream genres. They include Rap
being most affectionately called Holy Hip Hop and the Top 40 version of Christian
music being referred to as CCM. Gospel is still the powerhouse genre it has been
since the 60s and likewise for Southern Gospel. However, today's Gospel has a
more urban and R&B approach to it than the church choir inspired Gospel of
yesteryear.

Music today seems to evolve now rather than stick in a rigid classification. We
could go into more detailed classifications of Christian music, however, we will
save that for upcoming writings and discourse.
